Best Northern Lights Hotels in Lofoten

Lofoten’s weather is moody, but when the clouds clear, it’s one of the most dramatic aurora backdrop in the world

Enjoying the view at Kaikanten Rorbuer!

We've been to Lofoten several times but we’ve watched the aurora show up over Lofoten from a hotel window exactly once, standing by the pier at Kaikanten Rorbuer in October. Most nights it doesn't work out that well, and you often need to drive for clearer skies. But some bases put you closer to that outcome than others. Cabins with the fjord right outside, villages dark enough that you don't need to drive anywhere if Lady Aurora and Mister Weather decide to join forces. Here are our favorite northern lights hotels in Lofoten. But as usual for the aurora, treat them as a bonus rather than an absolute goal.

🐧 If you're heading to Lofoten, sort accommodation early — the best rorbuer sell out months in advance, especially in summer and aurora season. Here are our top picks:

🛌 Where to stay:
• Rostad Retro Rorbuer, Reine — we stayed here on a last-minute deal and it turned out to be one of the best views we've ever had.
• Skarungen, Kabelvåg — we stayed here and the sauna is great to warm up while waiting for the aurora.
• Kaikanten Rorbuer, Sennesvik — we stayed here in October and got a northern lights show right by the pier. Great value.
• Eliassen Rorbuer, Hamnøy — the red cabins from every Lofoten photo you've ever seen.

🇳🇴 Top experiences:
• Northern lights tour from Henningsvær — small group (max 7), guided by a local who tracks the forecast in real time.
• Snowshoe hike — Enjoy the still, frozen beauty of Lofoten without the crowds

🚗 You need a car in Lofoten. The islands stretch 170km and public transport isn't great. Book your rental in Bodø before you cross — usually cheaper than picking one up on the islands.

Best northern lights hotels in Lofoten: quick answer

If we had to pick one, it's probably Eliassen Rorbuer in Hamnøy, aurora sightings straight from the window and Reinefjord underneath to double any display. And our personal allround favorite: Rostad Retro Rorbuer. Lofoten Links Lodges on Gimsøya is the most deliberately built for it, north-facing glass and a darker stretch of coast. And Kaikanten Rorbuer near Leknes is our own proof it works, a northern lights show right by the pier there at a great price. All four, and a few more, below.

Reine, Hamnøy & Sakrisøy: the darkest, most photogenic base

Our view from our rorbu at Retro Rostad Rorbuer. You can imagine with the northern lights!

This corner of Moskenes is about as far from a streetlight as Lofoten gets, and it's also where some of our favorite Lofoten Hikes start, so daylight hours don't go to waste either. And even if the aurora doesn’t show up, the views won’t disappoint (if they do, you’re made of stone!).

Eliassen Rorbuer

The same red cabins on stilts that show up in half the Lofoten photos you've seen, and the fame is earned for a practical reason too. Guests staying here have reported catching the aurora right from their windows, with Reinefjord doubling any decent display in reflection. Steps from the bridge that gets you the classic Hamnøy shot on the nights the lights don't show.

Rostad Retro Rorbuer (we stayed there)

We've called the view from here one of the best we've ever had, and that's before the sky does anything. Vintage-style cabins on Olenilsøy looking straight across at the peaks above Reine, open enough that you don't need to go anywhere once a display starts.

Reinefjorden Sjøhus

The most modern option in this cluster, with fjord-facing windows big enough to watch for the lights without leaving bed. A good backup if Eliassen or Rostad are booked out, which happens fast in peak season.

You’ll find more details and options in our selection of the Best Reine Rorbuer.

Gimsøya

Gimsøya's northern coast sees less traffic and fewer lights than the villages further south, which is exactly why it's worth the detour if you're already planning a Winter Trip to Lofoten.

Lofoten Links Lodges

These lodges were built with floor-to-ceiling north-facing windows specifically for aurora viewing, per our own guide to the Northern Lights in Lofoten. About as purpose-built for this as Lofoten accommodation gets, and the darker northern coast around it does the rest.

Sennesvik & Kabelvåg: quieter, more central

Skårungen sauna and hot tub are great to warm up while waiting for the lights (less the cold plunge, of course)

Both sit closer to the middle of the archipelago than the Reine cluster, useful to drive to both sides of the islands based on the cloud coverage. We stayed in Sennesvik and drove to Haukland beach for clear skies when the aurora was active, but we also had a great display right by our apartment.

Read our guide to Where to Stay in Lofoten if you’re not sure about where to base yourself.

Kaikanten Rorbuer (we stayed there)

We got a full northern lights show right by the pier here on an October stay. A small cluster of waterfront cabins and apartments near Sennesvik, open fjord views toward the peaks, and barely any light pollution if you get away from the small harbor. Oh, and the waffles at the restaurant are delicious (what, you need some calories to burn out there in the cold!).

Skarungen (we stayed there)

We stayed in a rorbu there a few years back and came back for a cold plunge. The outdoor hot tub and sauna looking over Vestfjorden is a good spot to wait out a slow aurora night. Close enough to Svolvær for easy logistics, far enough that the town's lights aren't bothering.

Svolvær: if convenience matters more than dark skies

Not a good day for northern lights in Svolvær!

Svolvær is the biggest town in Lofoten (still not a big city, though) and the least ideal base on this list for aurora odds specifically, because of light pollution and buildings. If you need to stay central for flights, the ferry, or getting to Lofoten in general, it still works, but you may need to walk or drive a few minutes to darker ground. If the aurora activity is strong though (more on that in our article: Northern Lights for Dummies), you can see it straight from town, weather allowing.

Thon Hotel Svolvær

Floor-to-ceiling sea views from the room and a harbor location a few minutes' walk from darker water, if a display is strong enough. Not our top pick for odds, but a sensible one for logistics.

Tips for catching the lights from your aurora hotel in Lofoten

On a strong KP night, we drove to the other coast to get clear skies — here at Haukland beach

Weather

Cloud cover matters more here than the KP index. Lofoten only needs a KP of around 2 to 3 for a visible display, so a clear forecast on yr.no beats a high KP number most nights. And a rental car is always a plus to be able to avoid cloudy skies, because Lofoten weather is as changing as it gets! Read our guide to Renting a Car in Lofoten for more.

Book ahead

Book the aurora-forward rooms and rorbuer above months ahead if you're traveling in peak season, because they fill first. And even at the best of these, step outside if you can: a full sky is aways better than a window every time, and standing outside in the cold under an aurora is a multisensorial experience that is hard to explain.

🐧 Penguin tip: If these options are full, also check apartments and cabins. You can save big on meals if you have your own kitchen, or make a lovely hot chocolate while you’re waiting for the lights!
