Digital Nomad Travel Insurance: What You Actually Need When Work Takes You Everywhere
The standard travel insurance conversation changes when you're working abroad — here's what digital nomad travel insurance should actually cover, and how to choose the right plan.

We run a travel blog, and before that, we worked as freelancers. Which means at some point we crossed the line from "people who travel a lot" to "people who work while traveling" — and that changes the insurance conversation in ways that most standard guides don't address.
When you're working abroad, the stakes are different. You're not just covering a two-week holiday. You need health coverage that works for months at a stretch, potentially in multiple countries. You're carrying equipment — laptops, cameras, hard drives — that represents your income, not just your entertainment. And if something goes wrong, you can't just cut the trip short and go home, because the trip is the job.
The good news: there are travel insurance plans built for exactly this. The less good news: not all of them are worth the money, and the distinctions between them matter more than most people realize before they actually need to make a claim.

What kind of travel insurance do digital nomads need?
Standard travel insurance is designed around a simple model: you leave home, something goes wrong, you come home. Digital nomad travel insurance needs to handle a more complicated reality.
Continuous health coverage is the big one. If you're working abroad for three, six, or twelve months, you need medical coverage that doesn't reset or lapse between trips. A policy that covers you for 30 days at a time with gaps in between isn't a policy — it's a liability.
Equipment coverage matters more than most nomads factor in before they need it. A stolen or damaged laptop isn't just an inconvenience — it's your income. Check exactly what a policy covers for electronics and work equipment, and what the claim limits are.
Activity coverage applies if your work takes you anywhere physically demanding — which for travel writers, photographers, and outdoor content creators, it often does. Heymondo covers a wide range of adventure activities under the standard plan, which is one of the reasons we've stuck with it. We've snowmobiled in Svalbard, hiked in Lofoten, mushed in Swedish Lapland, walked on a glacier and snorkelled in freezing water in Iceland — all while working. We needed a policy that covered the job, not just the travel between jobs.
App-based support is underrated. If you need medical advice in the middle of nowhere — and you know our love for the Arctic— being able to start a consultation directly through the Heymondo app is the difference between a manageable situation and a stressful one. For workers abroad, this matters more than for people taking a week's holiday.
Annual multi-trip or long-stay — which fits nomads?

This is where digital nomad travel insurance gets specific, and it's worth being clear about the distinction.
If you're a nomad who still has a home base — you travel for months, but you return to your apartment in Lisbon or your parents’ place (no judgement here) — the annual multi-trip plan is usually the better fit. One policy, every trip covered for the year, cheaper per day than buying individual policies. We covered this in detail in our annual multi-trip travel insurance guide.
If you're a true nomad with no fixed base — moving continuously between countries, never really "going home" — the long-stay plan is the more honest answer. It covers one continuous trip of up to 90 days, and it's renewable, so you can extend it without breaking coverage. It doesn't assume you're going back somewhere.
Of course, alongside having the right insurance, finding the right role is key to staying on the move long-term. If you're planning your next adventure, you can explore open jobs with visa sponsorship on Jooble to help make your move easier.
The same applies to travel insurance for workers abroad in the more traditional sense: people on working visas, seasonal workers, people doing a year in another country. Long-stay, renewable, is built for you.
Penguin tip:
If you're unsure which plan fits, ask yourself this: do I have an address I consider home that I return to between trips? If yes, annual multi-trip. If the honest answer is no — or "my parents' house, technically" — long-stay is the cleaner choice. The difference matters when you make a claim.
Why Heymondo works for workers abroad
This was probably one of the most spectacular “offices” we ever had — Rostad Retro Rorbuer (you’ll find it in our favorite hotels & rorbuer in Lofoten)
We've been using Heymondo for the better part of two decades — well before we had a travel blog or a reason to recommend it to anyone. When we started Penguin Trampoline and looked for insurance partners, it was an easy decision. Yes, we earn a commission through our link, but we were using it before that, and we still do.
For nomads and workers abroad specifically: Heymondo's combination of adventure activity coverage, the app-based medical consultation feature, and the long-stay renewable option covers most of what this lifestyle actually requires. It's not the cheapest option on the market, but it covers more than cheaper alternatives — and coverage gaps are exactly what you don't want when you're working on the road.
Full breakdown of what's covered, how claims work, and how it compares to alternatives in our Heymondo review. And if you want to make sure you're getting the best price, our guide to saving on travel insurance has the full discount breakdown. Spoiler alert: you get 5% year-round if you book through our link, and 15% off during seasonal offers.
Did you know?
SafetyWing is often mentioned as the go-to for digital nomad travel insurance, and it's not a bad option for budget-conscious nomads with basic needs. But it covers less than Heymondo — particularly around trip cancellation and adventure activities. If your work involves anything physically active, or you have expensive non-refundable bookings, Heymondo's coverage is meaningfully broader for not much more money.

FAQ: Digital nomad travel insurance
What is digital nomad travel insurance?
Travel insurance designed for people who work remotely while traveling — covering extended periods abroad, often across multiple countries, with continuous health coverage rather than the trip-by-trip model of standard policies.
Does standard travel insurance work for digital nomads?
Usually not well. Standard policies are built around short trips with a clear return date. If you're working abroad for months at a time, moving between countries, or have no fixed return date, you need either an annual multi-trip policy or a long-stay plan — both of which are structured around longer, more complex travel patterns.
What's the difference between annual multi-trip and long-stay for nomads?
Annual multi-trip covers all trips within a year, assuming you return home between them. Long-stay covers one continuous trip of up to 90 days, renewable for people who stay away indefinitely. If you have a home base, annual. If you don't, long-stay.
Does digital nomad travel insurance cover equipment and laptops?
Depends on the policy. Check the electronics and personal belongings limits carefully before buying — and check whether work equipment is treated differently from personal items. This varies significantly between providers.
Is Heymondo good for digital nomads?
Yes, particularly for nomads who travel actively or do any kind of outdoor or adventure work. The long-stay plan is renewable, the app-based medical support is genuinely useful in remote locations, and the adventure activity coverage is broader than most comparable policies. And you get 5 to 15% off if you book through our link.
The insurance conversation changes when work and travel are the same thing. The right plan isn't the cheapest or the most comprehensive — it's the one that actually matches how you travel, how long you stay away, and what you're doing while you're there. Get that right first, then sort the price.
