We often get asked if travel insurance is necessary.

Good question! Keep reading to find out, or click here to benefit from a 5% discount* — up to 15% with seasonal offers — if you do need travel insurance.

So, do you need travel insurance?

Well, it varies. If you've snagged budget-friendly flights, booked accommodations with flexible cancellation policies, and you're an EU citizen traveling within the EU, you might opt out of travel insurance.

Given that you'll have your EU insurance card to cover any medical issues, you might decide to take the risk and not book cancellation coverage.

However, if your trip is on the pricier side and involves travel overseas, expensive tours and/or non-refundable accommodations, we highly recommend investing in travel insurance, covering both cancellation and health concerns.

It’s particularly wise in destinations like the US, where a simple doctor visit can rack up hefty bills.

If you enjoy active holidays, then it’s definitely a good idea. Whether you're surfing in Nazaré, hiking in Swedish Lapland (you might be interested in our hiking & backpacker travel insurance guide), wrecking your snowmobile in Svalbard, or cutting your foot on coral in Formentera (ask us how we know), travel insurance that covers adventure sports and remote medical care is a must. We recommend Heymondo because it’s affordable, flexible, easy to use, and covers the kind of travel we actually do. Plus, as an exclusive offer for Penguin Trampoline, our readers can benefit from a 5% discount* — up to 15% with seasonal offers!

What are the benefits of travel insurance?

Medical emergencies

If you become ill or injured while traveling, especially in a foreign country where healthcare costs can be high, travel insurance can cover your medical expenses — including hospital stays, emergency medical evacuation, and repatriation.

Did you know?

Some hazardous activities, like snowmobiling in harsh conditions, require travel insurance to be booked.

Trip cancellation or interruption

Life is unpredictable, and sometimes, unforeseen circumstances may force you to cancel or cut your trip short. Travel insurance can reimburse you for non-refundable trip costs due to covered reasons such as illness, injury, natural disasters, pandemics or other emergencies.

When we resumed traveling in 2021, we made sure to book a policy covering COVID-19.

Travel delays

If your trip is delayed due to reasons beyond your control, such as weather, airline strikes, or mechanical issues, travel insurance can compensate you for additional expenses such as accommodations, meals, and transportation.

Emergency assistance

Many travel insurance policies offer 24/7 emergency assistance services, providing help with medical referrals, translation services, legal assistance, and other emergency support while traveling.

Other travel issues

From missed connections to rental car damage, travel insurance can offer coverage for various issues that may come up during your trip, ensuring you're financially protected against unexpected expenses.

Peace of mind — priceless!

Traveling can be stressful, and having travel insurance can provide peace of mind, knowing that you're financially protected against unforeseen events that could otherwise ruin your trip or cause significant financial strain.

Yearly and long-stay plans for regular travelers

If you’re taking three or more trips a year — or basically living out of a carry-on — the Heymondo annual or long-stay plan is usually the smarter financial move.

On a per-day basis, it’s far cheaper than stacking individual policies, and the more you travel, the bigger that gap gets. We use the annual plan ourselves, and the fact that it’s just there every time we go somewhere is reason enough.

You’ve got two solid options depending on how you travel: the annual multi-trip plan, which covers all your trips over 12 months, or the long-stay insurance, designed for trips up to 90 days and renewable if you’re not done roaming yet (not sorry).

If you’re not sure about the right one for you, read our comparison: Annual multi-trip travel insurance vs. long stay.

FAQ: Travel insurance discount and benefits

Is Heymondo good travel insurance?
Yes. It’s one of the few travel insurers we’ve found that’s easy to use internationally, with excellent coverage and a mobile app that actually works. We’ve used it from Greenland to Alaska — and it’s saved our trips more than once.

Does Heymondo really cover medical emergencies abroad?
Absolutely. Their 24/7 assistance service connects you directly to a doctor or hospital, even in remote regions. We once used the in-app chat in Lapland to get medical advice within minutes.

How do I get 15% off Heymondo travel insurance?
Use our exclusive Heymondo link — the discount applies automatically at checkout. Depending on current promotions, you’ll get between 5% and 15% off any policy.

Does Heymondo cover adventure travel or winter sports?
Yes, with the right plan. Activities like skiing, dog-sledding, glacier hiking, or snowmobiling are covered if you select the Adventure Sports add-on.

Can I buy Heymondo once I’ve already started my trip?
Yes. You can start coverage after you’ve left your home country, which is rare among insurers. Great if you’re already on the road.

Does Heymondo cover trip cancellations or delays?
Their Top and Premium plans include coverage for cancellations, delays, and lost luggage. Always read your policy details — the interface makes this easy to check.

Why choose Heymondo over other insurers?
Because it’s built for travelers. The app simplifies claims, communication, and policy management. For us, it’s replaced phone calls, paperwork, and endless forms with a single tap.
