Tours in Ilulissat, Greenland: Icefjord boat trips, walking tours & what to book

The tours worth booking in Ilulissat — icefjord boat trips you book directly with local operators, three guided walks on Viator, and what we did ourselves.

Every single iceberg and piece of ice is picture-worthy in the Icefjord!

Ilulissat has a small but focused tour offering — which suits the destination. The town is compact, the Icefjord is the main event, and the best experiences here are the ones that get you on the water or into the landscape rather than in a bus. Most of what's worth doing is booked directly with local operators rather than through the big international platforms, and this guide covers exactly what exists, how to book it, and what to expect based on our own experience.

What are the best tours in Ilulissat?

On our Icefjord boat tour with Unique Tours

The Icefjord boat trip is the standout tour in Ilulissat — two hours among calving icebergs on Disko Bay, bookable directly with local operators. Humpback whale and seal sightings are common on the water in summer. Scenic helicopter flights over the icefjord are a second option for those who want the aerial perspective. For guided walking tours bookable on Viator, there are three options: a general city walk, a couples-focused romantic tour, and a self-guided smartphone audio tour covering Ilulissat's heritage. In winter, dog sledding (an important part of the local culture) across the frozen fjord is the additional experience most visitors add. None of these require a travel agent or a package — everything is bookable independently, either online in advance or on arrival in town.

Ilulissat boat tours in the Icefjord — the one not to miss

Disko Bay was a childhood dream for me, and it exceeded all my expectations

As a child, I (Eli) had seen Disko Bay in a Nat Geo documentary, so it was a lifelong dream. There is no tour in Ilulissat quite like this one, and it isn't on any international platform — it's run by local operators who know the icefjord specifically and the Inuit culture, which changes what you hear out there and how you read what you're looking at. You board a small vessel and head out into Disko Bay, where the calving front of Sermeq Kujalleq glacier has been depositing icebergs for thousands of years. Some are the size of office buildings. Some are translucent blue in a way that photographs can't quite capture. The tour runs around two hours, with time on deck for the full exposure to wind and scale, and a heated cabin below when you need a break. Humpback whales and seals appear regularly through the summer months — not as a bonus but as a genuine part of what Disko Bay offers on most departures.

Ours didn't go on the day we booked. Too much ice had come through overnight — the kind of volume local operators don't put a boat out in — and they rescheduled us for the following morning. The sun came out, the ice shifted, and the trip ran in conditions that turned out to be better than the original slot. That flexibility only works if you've booked early enough to have a morning to spare.

This is not bookable on Viator or GetYourGuide — it's arranged directly with local operators. Unique Tours is the operator we used and the one many visitors book with, and their website takes online reservations in advance. Seats are limited and fill quickly during the summer season and the aurora months.

Penguin tip:

Book the boat tour on arrival day or day one. Operators reschedule for ice and weather, and having a spare morning is the difference between catching the next slot and missing the tour entirely. We got rescheduled once; it only worked out because we had time left. Also, make sure to check your phone and email for updates!

Helicopter tours over the icefjord

Our flight from Nuuk to Ilulissat

Air Greenland runs scenic helicopter flights from Ilulissat over the UNESCO Ilulissat Icefjord — the aerial perspective on a glacier system of this scale is different from anything you get on the ground or on the water. The calving front of Sermeq Kujalleq, the fjord channels between icebergs, and the scale of the ice sheet behind it are all visible in a way that no walking trail or boat trip can replicate. These are booked directly with Air Greenland rather than through international platforms, and availability is limited — worth looking up as part of your pre-trip planning rather than assuming you can arrange it in town.

We didn’t do it as the budget didn’t allow, but our flight from Nuuk to Ilulissat (in a tiny plane) was already pretty spectacular on a clear day!

Winter tours and dog sledding in Ilulissat

I know, it’s really hard not to pet the pups when they look at you like that!

Dog sledding in Ilulissat is not a tourist activity that happens to use dogs — it's one of the oldest and most intact expressions of Inuit culture still practiced in the Arctic (and it’s not part of the Sámi culture in Lapland, as sometimes wrongly advertised!).

The Greenlandic sled dog, a distinct breed protected by law north of the Arctic Circle in Greenland, has been the primary means of travel and hunting across the sea ice for thousands of years. In Ilulissat specifically, the dogs outnumber the people — the town of around 4,500 residents is home to a larger population of sled dogs, kept by mushers who maintain working teams year-round. You hear them before you see them: the sound of hundreds of dogs carries across the town from the designated dog areas on the outskirts, and it tells you something about the scale of the tradition you're stepping into. They can be really cute but refrain from touching them. They’re not pets!

From roughly November through April, when the fjord freezes and snow covers the tundra, dog sledding becomes the Ilulissat experience that summer visitors can't access. Local operators run trips across the sea ice toward the icefjord — the combination of a working dog team and calving icebergs in the background is one of those things that doesn't need a filter. Half-day and full-day options exist; book directly through your hotel, as most accommodation in town can arrange it.

The northern lights in Greenland make winter the season for a different kind of tour altogether — dedicated aurora excursions run from October through March, again booked directly with local operators. Our full northern lights guide covers timing, forecast tools, and what to expect.

🐧 Penguin tip: Winter in Ilulissat requires proper gear. If you haven't packed for Arctic temperatures, check our Greenland packing guide before booking any outdoor winter tours — what you wear on a dog sled at -15°C matters considerably.

🌊 FAQ: Best tours in Ilulissat

What tours are available in Ilulissat?

The main options are icefjord boat tours (booked directly with Unique Tours), scenic helicopter flights over the icefjord (booked directly with Air Greenland), guided walking tours and a heritage audio tour (all on Viator), and dog sledding in winter. The icefjord boat trip is the experience most visitors prioritize.

Can you book Ilulissat boat tours on Viator or GetYourGuide?

No — Ilulissat boat tours are not currently available on Viator or GetYourGuide. They are booked directly with local operators. Unique Tours is the main operator with online booking available through their own website.

How long is the Ilulissat icefjord boat tour?

Around two hours. Tours include time on deck among the icebergs, a heated cabin below, and coffee and cake served on board. Whale and seal sightings are common, particularly in summer.

Can you see whales in Ilulissat?

Yes — humpback whales and seals appear regularly on Disko Bay during the summer months and are a common part of the icefjord boat tour experience. There is no dedicated whale watching tour in Ilulissat; sightings happen naturally on the water during the standard boat trip.

Are there helicopter tours in Ilulissat?

Yes. Air Greenland operates scenic helicopter flights over the Ilulissat Icefjord, offering an aerial view of the glacier and icebergs that isn't possible from the ground or on the water. These are booked directly with Air Greenland rather than through Viator or GetYourGuide.

Is dog sledding important to Inuit culture in Ilulissat?

Dog sledding is central to Greenlandic Inuit culture and in Ilulissat it's still a living practice, not a heritage display. The town has more sled dogs than people — Greenlandic sled dogs, a protected breed that cannot be replaced by other breeds north of the Arctic Circle in Greenland. Local mushers maintain working teams year-round, and the dogs are kept as working animals rather than pets. A dog sledding trip in Ilulissat puts you alongside a tradition that has been the primary means of Arctic travel and hunting for thousands of years.

When is the best time to do tours in Ilulissat?

Summer (June to August) for boat tours, midnight sun, and walking tours. Winter (November to April) for dog sledding and northern lights excursions. The boat tour runs year-round but the ice conditions in spring make March and April particularly dramatic. Read our guide to the best time to visit Greenland.

Do I need to book Ilulissat tours in advance?

Yes for the boat tour — seats are limited, and operators reschedule for ice and weather conditions, so booking early gives you a spare day if needed. The Viator walking tours can often be booked on shorter notice, and the audio tour has no fixed capacity. Dog sledding in winter should be arranged at least a few days ahead.

Tours in Ilulissat are one piece of a destination that rewards time rather than rushing. The icefjord short walk takes an hour at a very minimum and most people do it twice — once to arrive and once because they can't believe what they saw the first time (we went 3 times). For what else to do in town beyond the tours, our Ilulissat guide covers the full picture.

On accommodation, the best hotels in Ilulissat guide covers every option from Hotel Arctic's Aurora Cabins to Cabin Jomsborg, where we stayed — a self-catering cabin ten meters from the water. If you're deciding between Ilulissat and Nuuk, our Nuuk vs Ilulissat guide makes the case for each. And if you're connecting both towns, the Greenland by ferry guide covers the Arctic Umiaq Line route — one of the most remarkable journeys in the Arctic and a strong reason not to fly between the two, at least one way.
