Tours in Nuuk, Greenland: Fjord Boat Trips, City Walks & More
The best tours in Nuuk — fjord boat trips through the world's second-largest fjord system, guided city walks through the colonial quarter, northern lights excursions, and what's bookable on Viator and GetYourGuide.
It’s difficult to translate the vibe of Nuuk with a picture… We absolutely loved it!
Nuuk offers more tours than most visitors expect. The fjord system surrounding the capital — Nuup Kangerlua, the second-largest in the world — is the main event, and getting out on the water is what most people remember longest (in our opinion, it’s also spectacular from the top of nearby mountains). Add guided city walks that give the colonial quarter and the Greenland National Museum genuine depth, northern lights excursions in winter, and a solid selection available on the major booking platforms, and Nuuk turns out to be one of the more tour-rich destinations in Greenland. This guide covers everything bookable, how to do it, and what to expect in one of our favorite Arctic cities.

What are the best tours in Nuuk?
The best tours in Nuuk include a fjord boat trip — two to four hours on Nuup Kangerlua, the world's second-largest fjord system, with icebergs, humpback whales, and Sermitsiaq mountain framing the horizon. Some tours including a Greenlandic picnic on board.
Guided city walking tours cover the colonial quarter, Hans Egede statue, Nuuk Cathedral, and the Greenland National Museum.
In winter, dedicated northern lights excursions drive you out of the city and into dark fjord territory.
Unlike Ilulissat tours, almost everything in Nuuk is available on the major platforms — you can plan and book the whole thing before you arrive.
Nuuk Fjord boat tours — getting out on Nuup Kangerlua
Nuup Kangerlua is even more beautiful from above! — Here at the top of Lille Malene
The fjord is just incredible (we also admired it from the summit of Lille Malene - More on hiking in Nuuk in our Nuuk Travel Guide). Nuup Kangerlua — the Greenlandic name for Nuuk Fjord — is the world's second-largest fjord system, a web of channels, inlets, and open water that stretches far beyond what the town itself suggests. Tours depart from the Colonial Harbor and head out toward Sermitsiaq, the 1,210-meter mountain that defines Nuuk's skyline, navigating past icebergs drifting in from the interior and coastline that sees almost no other traffic. Humpback whales and seals appear regularly through the summer months. White-tailed eagles are common year-round.
Unlike most boat tours in Greenland, the Nuuk fjord options are bookable on both Viator and GetYourGuide. Both include a Greenlandic picnic on board. Heated, enclosed cabins are standard for when the wind picks up on deck — which in Nuuk (and most of Greenland, actually) happens reliably.
Penguin tip:
Dress for the water, not the town. Nuuk in July can feel mild on shore; on a moving boat in Nuup Kangerlua it's a different story entirely. Layers, wind protection, and waterproofing regardless of season — this applies even in summer. Check our packing for Greenland guide.
Walking tours in Nuuk
Old Nuuk is even more picturesque with snow!
Nuuk has a good selection of guided walking experiences — more varied than most visitors expect from a capital of 20,000 people. The tours below run the spectrum from general city orientation to food and drink experiences that give you Greenlandic culture through what's on the plate rather than what's on a placard. Obviously, we also recommend walking around on your own and perusing the cool local design stores, but it’s always interesting and richer to get a local perspective.
🚶 The best of Nuuk walking tour
A two-hour guided walk through the capital with a local guide covering the colonial quarter, Hans Egede statue, Nuuk Cathedral, and the stories embedded in the city that most visitors pass without registering. Nuuk looks small from the outside — this tour shows why that's an underestimation. The right starting point for anyone arriving for the first time who wants context before exploring independently.

🏛️ Walking tour with museum visit & Greenlandic tasting
A three-hour tour that goes deeper than a city walk. Starting at Katuaq — Nuuk's striking cultural center — the route passes Hans Egede statue and Nuuk Cathedral before heading into the Greenland National Museum (we loved it!) for a guided visit: Inuit mummies, traditional clothing, tools, and artifacts that tell the story of life on this island over thousands of years. The tour ends at Café Nuan with a curated Greenlandic tasting — local specialties (read our Arctic Food Guide), both sweet and savory, in a setting that makes the whole thing feel earned. The best single tour for understanding Nuuk rather than just seeing it.

🍺 Greenlandic beers, burgers & samplers
A two-hour walking tour built around Nuuk's food and craft beer scene, starting with a stroll through Colonial Harbour before heading to Killut — Greenland's only distillery — for a look at how Arctic ingredients shape what ends up in the glass. The tour ends with a Greenlandic burger (reindeer or muskox, depending on what's running), finger food samplers, and paired craft beers. The most social option in Nuuk's walking tour lineup, and the one that gets you closest to what locals actually eat and drink. Bookable on Viator.
→ BOOK THE NUUK BEERS & BURGERS TOUR
🍵 Greenlandic tea tasting with sweets & savory bites
A slower, more intimate two-hour experience with a short walk ending at Café Nuan — lit by a traditional Qulliq oil lamp — where a local host walks you through Arctic herbal teas made from wild-foraged Greenlandic herbs and berries, paired with local sweets and savory bites. A private group experience that works particularly well as a first evening in Nuuk or a calm counterpoint to a day on the fjord.
Northern lights tours in Nuuk
Seeing the northern lights in Greenland feels even more special than anywhere else
Nuuk sits at 64°N — inside the auroral oval and close enough to the Arctic that a KP of 2 to 3 produces a visible display on a clear night. The catch is the city itself: Nuuk has enough light pollution that getting away from it matters. The guided excursions solve this — they drive you fifteen to twenty minutes out of town toward the fjord, into darker sky, with a guide who knows which direction tends to clear on a given night and can reposition if needed. These run October through March, when the nights are long enough to work with.
→ BOOK A NORTHERN LIGHTS TOUR IN NUUK
For the full picture on Greenland aurora — timing, forecast tools, best months, and the Ilulissat icefjord angle — our northern lights in Greenland guide covers everything.
🐧 Penguin tip: We suggest five nights minimum if the northern lights are the main reason for the trip. Cloud cover is the primary obstacle across all Greenland aurora locations, and it doesn't cooperate with short itineraries. The guided tour gives you a better shot at a clear window than going out alone, and in Greenland, you can’t just drive around — local knowledge of where the sky tends to break first is worth considerably more here than it is in destinations with better forecasting infrastructure.

🌊 FAQ: Best tours in Nuuk
What are the best tours in Nuuk?
The fjord boat trip is the standout — getting out on Nuup Kangerlua, the world's second-largest fjord system, past Sermitsiaq mountain, icebergs, and wildlife is the Nuuk experience that summer visitors remember most. For walking tours, there are four Viator options: a general city walk, a museum visit combined with a Greenlandic tasting, a craft beer and reindeer burger tour, and an intimate Arctic tea tasting at Café Nuan. In winter, guided northern lights excursions complete the lineup.
Are there boat tours in Nuuk?
Yes — Nuuk fjord boat tours are bookable on both Viator and GetYourGuide, which makes it unusual among Greenlandic destinations. Options range from a shorter fjord adventure to a 3.5-hour scenic cruise with a Greenlandic picnic on board.
Can you book Nuuk tours on Viator or GetYourGuide?
Yes — unlike Ilulissat, where boat tours are only bookable directly with local operators, Nuuk has fjord boat tours, city walking tours, and northern lights excursions all available on Viator and GetYourGuide. Most of the main experiences are bookable online before you arrive.
How long is the Nuuk fjord boat tour?
Options range from around two hours for the shorter fjord adventure up to 3.5 hours for the scenic cruise with Greenlandic picnic. Both include time on deck with open views and heated cabin access when needed.
Can you see whales in Nuuk?
Yes — humpback whales and seals are regularly spotted on Nuuk fjord tours through the summer months. White-tailed eagles are common year-round. Sightings aren't guaranteed but they're frequent enough that most summer departures see something on the water.
Are there northern lights tours in Nuuk?
Yes — guided northern lights excursions run from Nuuk from October through March, driving out of the city lights toward the fjord for darker sky and a guide who knows local conditions.
When is the best time for tours in Nuuk?
Summer (June to August) for fjord boat tours, whale sightings, and walking tours in long daylight. Winter (October to March) for northern lights excursions. March is the strongest single month for aurora across all Greenland locations. The boat tour runs year-round, but summer gives you the fullest conditions on the fjord.

Tours are one part of a city that rewards time spent in it. The colonial quarter, the Greenland National Museum, and the harbor area all hold up to independent exploration — and the fjord is always visible from the right vantage point, reminding you what's just outside town. Our Nuuk travel guide covers what to do beyond the tours.
On accommodation, the best hotels in Nuuk guide runs through every option in the city, from harborside rooms to properties with fjord views. If you're weighing Nuuk against Ilulissat — which most Greenland visitors eventually are — our Nuuk vs Ilulissat guide makes the case for each. For connecting the two towns without flying, the Greenland by ferry guide covers the Arctic Umiaq Line route — one of the most remarkable journeys in the Arctic we ever experienced, and a strong reason to travel slowly.
