Beach Hotels Near Barcelona: Our Picks for Sleeping by the Sea (by People who Live Here)
A true holiday vibe, just outside Barcelona — but a world away from the city’s buzz
Our old place and its regular visitor, across the URH Sitges Playa Hotel
Quick navigation: Sitges · Vilanova & Platja Llarga · El Vendrell & Sant Salvador · Altafulla & Tamarit · El Masnou & Platja d'Ocata · Arenys de Mar · Tossa de Mar · FAQ
Barceloneta is fine. It's also where roughly four million people go every summer to share a towel-sized patch of sand and a view of someone's discarded Aperol Spritz cup. For everyone else — the people who want actual beach, actual quiet, and an actual reason to leave the city — the answer is a train ride south, a coastal drive north, or a commitment to the Costa Brava.
We live on the Garraf coast, right outside Sitges, so this isn't a list assembled from a search engine. These are the hotels we'd actually recommend to someone who asked us in person — organized around the same coastline we covered in our hidden beaches near Barcelona guide, so if you haven't decided which beach you want yet, that's the place to start.

South of Barcelona — The Garraf Coast and Costa Daurada
View from our honeymoon suite at Calipolis Hotel
The southern stretch is where most of the serious beachfront hotels near Barcelona are concentrated, and for good reason: the Garraf coast and the Costa Daurada give you a long run of good sand, calm Mediterranean water, and towns that are actually worth being in once the sun goes down.
Getting here is easy. All the towns on this stretch are reachable by Rodalies or Renfe trains from Barcelona Sants — no car required.
Sitges
By train: 35–40 minutes from Barcelona Sants
We're biased. We live here. But Sitges keeps coming up whenever anyone asks about beach hotels near Barcelona because it earns it — seventeen beaches + coves, a Noucentista old town perched above the sea, restaurants that punch far above the town's population, and a seafront promenade with a concentration of genuine beach hotels that the rest of this coastline struggles to match.
Our full off-the-beaten-track Sitges guide covers the town beyond the beach if you want the fuller picture. And if you're visiting for Pride or for the LGBTQ+ scene, our LGBTQ+ guide to Sitges has everything you need.
🏖️ URH Sitges Playa
Best for: beach-first stays, couples, families wanting a great location without the boutique price
Full disclosure: we used to live directly across the street from this hotel. We walked past it approximately four hundred times a week and watched a lot of guests have a great time (and take a looot of selfies from their balcony with sea views). The URH Sitges Playa sits right on Playa de San Sebastián — one of the best (biased again) and most central beaches in town — with calm water, good sand, and the iconis Sitges church and old town as a backdrop. The location score on Booking.com is not a mistake.
It's not a design hotel. It's a proper beach hotel that does exactly what it says, with well-kept rooms, consistently praised staff (we know them and can confirm that), and value that makes more sense than some of the boutique alternatives nearby.
Getting there: train to Sitges, then a flat walk along the promenade — the hotel is hard to miss.
We got to visit Casa Vilella twice
🏛️ Hotel Casa Vilella
Best for: romantic escapes, couples who want something architecturally beautiful
Fourteen rooms, seafront location at the quieter end of the promenade, and a building designed by Joan Rubió i Bellver — an architect who trained under Gaudí. The Noucentisme style here is distinct from the more famous Modernisme of Barcelona (think refined classical Mediterranean rather than organic ornament), and it's the dominant local architectural language in Sitges. Casa Vilella wears it better than almost anything else in town.
There's a pool, terrace gardens, a chill-out area, and a Mediterranean restaurant. Rooms have sea views. If we're honest, it's probably the most beautiful property on the whole list — it just doesn't shout about it.
Getting there: train to Sitges, then a short walk along the promenade towards the quieter residential end.
🏚️ El Xalet
Best for: people who want a story to tell, food-focused stays, architecture curiosity
El Xalet is where you stay when you want the building to be part of the experience. The hotel officially calls itself "El Xalet Noucentista" — it's a 19th-century villa with original floral stained-glass windows, mosaic floors, and antique furniture that the renovation left largely intact, designed by Gaietà Buigas i Monravà.
A note on the style, since this comes up: some visitors expect Catalan Modernisme (Gaudí's language — organic, ornate, the Barcelona you know from postcards). El Xalet is Noucentisme — the movement that came after, more classically Mediterranean and more restrained. It's the architectural identity of Sitges specifically, and if you want to understand what that means from the inside, staying here is a good way to do it.
The restaurant is seasonal (June to September) and worth planning around — that’s one of our go-to. The food and service are excellent, and it’s lovely to have dinner in the garden by the pool and the cocktail bar. The beach is ten minutes on foot.
Getting there: train to Sitges, ten minutes on foot to the hotel and a further ten to the seafront.
Can you spot Jake at El Xalet restaurant?
🌊 Hotel Calipolis
Best for: families, honeymoons, anyone who wants the classic Sitges beachfront experience done well
We should be transparent: Hotel Calipolis is on this list partly because we love it, and partly because we spent our honeymoon here and got upgraded to a suite with a sea view without asking.
The hotel sits directly on the seafront. The terraces are wide, the Mediterranean views are panoramic, and the breakfast — which we have tested extensively in both honeymoon and non-honeymoon contexts — is a good buffet. It's a four-star beachfront hotel that has refined its formula over many years to the point where there isn't much to complain about. Particularly well-suited to families and to anyone who wants a reliable, comfortable, classic Sitges stay.
Getting there: train to Sitges, short walk along the promenade.
⚓ Hotel Port Sitges
Best for: marina atmosphere, harbor views, those arriving by boat
Different in character from the others on this list. Hotel Port Sitges is in the Aiguadolç marina — about twenty minutes' walk from the town centre — and the views here are of the harbor and open sea rather than a beach. The reviews will tell you the decor is dated, and that's fair (although our friends who stayed there got a renovated room); it's a hotel that hasn't kept pace with the boutique wave in Sitges but holds its own on location and on the particular appeal of falling asleep to the sound of a marina. Oh, and the views… Waterfront restaurants are right on the doorstep.
If you specifically want the marina atmosphere, or you're arriving by boat, this is the one. Go in knowing what you're booking, but it’s great value for Sitges.
Getting there: train to Sitges, then a taxi or twenty-minute walk through the residential end of town.
Penguin Trampoline tip:
Sitges Pride (typically late June to early July) is one of the best in Southern Europe — genuinely worth building a trip around. Hotels book out months in advance and prices climb steeply across the board, especially for the smaller boutique properties. If you're visiting then, reserve as early as you possibly can. And read our LGBTQ+ Sitges guide!

Vilanova i la Geltrú — Cubelles
Winter sunset at Platja Llarga in Cubelles
By train: About 45 min from Barcelona Sants
Platja Llarga de Cubelles is one of the longest and least crowded beaches in this part of the coast — low services, dune-backed, clothing-optional in sections, the kind of beach that rewards people who are specifically looking for it. We covered it in our hidden beaches guide for exactly those reasons.
The town with the best beachfront accommodation in this stretch isn't Cubelles itself but its slightly larger neighbour, Vilanova i la Geltrú — which has a proper seafront promenade, a fishing port, and enough going on in the evenings to justify staying more than one night. You can easily visit Sitges from Vilanova (6 minutes train ride or lovely walk along the coves), and accommodation is much cheaper.
🌅 MAREA Aparthotel
Best for: self-catering stays, couples, anyone who wants a seafront base with kitchen access
MAREA sits directly on the Vilanova seafront promenade, metres from the beach. The apartments are modern and well-equipped — balconies, full kitchen setup, the kind of place that works well if you're planning multiple beach days and want the flexibility of cooking your own meals. Seafront restaurants are right outside the door for when the self-catering enthusiasm runs out.
Getting there: train to Vilanova i la Geltrú, then a short walk to the promenade. Platja Llarga de Cubelles is accessible from here by taxi, bike, or a scenic coastal walk.
El Vendrell & Sant Salvador Beach
By train: About 1 hour from Barcelona Sants to Sant Vicenç de Calders or Calafell
Sant Salvador Beach in El Vendrell — Blue Flag waters, a calm sea, a riverside thermal spring nearby, a promenade — is the kind of place that comes up in our hidden beaches guide as a family-friendly alternative to the more scenically dramatic beaches further south. We love it because old fishermen's houses were preserved, which is pretty unique in the area (thumbs up!). There’s also a lot more space on the beach than in nearby Calafell. Do yourself a favor and book a table at Casinet restaurant!
The hotel situation here is also better than the town's profile would suggest.
🌴 Le Méridien Ra Beach Hotel & Spa
Best for: full resort experience, families with children, spa-focused stays, a proper splurge on the Costa Daurada
The Ra Beach is a five-star resort sitting directly on Sant Salvador Beach — one of the more complete resort packages you'll find within striking distance of Barcelona. Two restaurants, a beach club with shaded deck, a full spa offering hydrotherapy and sea water treatments, a kids' club with activities, and sea-view rooms with balconies. The kind of property where the point is to not leave very much.
It's operated by Marriott under the Le Méridien brand, which means the infrastructure and consistency are there. It's also the most resort-oriented property on this list — if you want something that functions as a standalone destination rather than a base for exploring, this is it. And it’s very pretty!
Getting there: train to Sant Vicenç de Calders, then taxi to the hotel.
Altafulla & Tamarit Beach
Book a hotel near Tamarit so you can have this beach all to yourself!
By train: About 1 hour 15 minutes from Barcelona Sants to Altafulla-Tamarit station
Tamarit and Waikiki Beach (Platja Fonda) — the wild, pine-backed, castle-overlooked stretch we covered in the hidden beaches guide — sits right next to the village of Altafulla, which is where you want to be sleeping. Altafulla is a small, well-preserved medieval village on the Costa Daurada, about 10 kilometres from Tarragona, with a beach at its feet and a pair of hotels that between them cover most of what you'd want from a stay in this part of the coast. It’s way underrated and mostly known by locals.
And if you want to keep driving south, read our guide to southern Catalonia’s hidden gems along the Costa Daurada!
🌿 May Altafulla Beach Boutique Hotel
Best for: couples, design-minded travellers, anyone who wants boutique intimacy right on the seafront
May is the kind of hotel that earns the word boutique without having to work too hard to convince you. It sits 70 metres from Altafulla Beach and less than a kilometre from Tamarit — which means the castle-and-beach combination from the hidden beaches guide is essentially on your doorstep. The rooms are soundproofed and spacious, the eco-conscious design is understated rather than earnest, and the Pinxo & Brasa restaurant in the garden serves grilled meats and Mediterranean food in an atmosphere that feels more dinner party than hotel restaurant.
The rooftop Mistic Bar is the headline: sea views, cocktails, Altafulla's rooftops stretching out below. The kind of sundowner situation that makes you feel like you found something.
Getting there: train to Altafulla-Tamarit, a short walk or taxi to the hotel.
BOOK MAY ALTAFULLA BEACH BOUTIQUE HOTEL
🏊 Altafulla Mar Hotel
Best for: families, groups, those wanting more space and three pools
The larger sibling property to May, and a different kind of stay — 135 rooms, three pools (two outdoor plus a heated rooftop pool with sea views and an adults-only policy), three restaurants, and balconies on every room. It's four stars and it earns them through scale and infrastructure rather than intimacy.
If you're traveling with kids or a group and the boutique scale of May feels too small, Altafulla Mar gives you room to spread out without sacrificing the location. The beach is a four-minute walk.
Getting there: train to Altafulla-Tamarit, short walk to the hotel.

North of Barcelona: The Maresme Coast
Mac, our mascot, enjoying the Maresme
The Maresme is the northern counterpart to everything above. That being said, the vibe is very different.
It’s a long strip of sandy coast between Barcelona and the Costa Brava, with fishing towns, local beach bars, and an atmosphere that's noticeably less polished and noticeably more genuine than the more tourist-facing spots to the south.
The Rodalies train runs the whole length of it from Barcelona (right along the sea), which, admittedly, makes it a bit less scenic than the South.
El Masnou — Platja d'Ocata
By train: 20–25 minutes from Barcelona França or Passeig de Gràcia
Platja d'Ocata in El Masnou is the Maresme beach we'd send most people to first — white sand, calm water, easy access, and on a clear day you can see the Barcelona skyline in the distance. We covered it in the hidden beaches guide. The hotel options in El Masnou are modest, but they're there.
🏠 Hotel Llar de Capitans
Best for: Maresme coastal base, those wanting history alongside beach access, genuinely local atmosphere
The building was originally constructed in 1865 as a modernist house and reopened under new management at the end of 2024 with renovated interiors. It's a three-minute walk from Ocata Beach and five minutes from the train station, which makes it an efficient base for anyone wanting to explore this stretch of the Maresme coast without a car. There's a restaurant on site, rooms are spacious and well-reviewed, and the staff ratings consistently come out high. It's a three-star property — unassuming and honest about what it is.
Getting there: Rodalies train to El Masnou-Ocata, then a five-minute walk.
Arenys de Mar
By train: About 50 minutes from Barcelona França
Arenys de Mar is a fishing port with a long beach, a historic market, and a seafood restaurant scene that runs on actual catches rather than tourist menus. We covered it in the hidden beaches guide as the most authentically local option on the northern coast. The accommodation situation is slim, but there's one property that earns its place.
🍽️ Hotel Vila Arenys
Best for: foodie couples, boutique stays, anyone who wants genuine quiet and genuinely good food
Fifteen rooms and a restaurant — El MOT — that leads with innovative Catalan cooking in a town that doesn't usually appear on food itineraries. Two rooms have private terraces with plunge pools; the suite adds a jacuzzi and a fireplace, an incongruous but appealing combination for a seaside escape.
The beach is a short walk away. The fishing port is worth a wander for the catch of the day and for the kind of harbor quiet that more popular towns on this list have largely lost.
Getting there: Rodalies train to Arenys de Mar. The hotel is in the town centre.
Track sea turtles or dolphins in the Mediterranean
Loggerhead turtles are nesting more often along Spain’s Mediterranean coast — with record sightings near the Ebro Delta. Common dolphins are also regulars along the Catalan coast. We volunteer with CRAM, a local marine rescue centre. With Fahlo bracelets, you can track a real animal’s journey while supporting marine conservation — get 20% off!
Further — Tossa de Mar, Costa Brava
Typical postcard view of the Costa Brava (we took this photo in Begur)
By car: About 1.5 hours from Barcelona. Seasonal bus service available but a car gives you more flexibility.
We included Tossa de Mar in our hidden beaches near Barcelona guide and it keeps coming up because it keeps earning it: the medieval walled town, the castle headland, the arc of the bay, the quality of the water. It's the furthest option on this list by some margin, but the hotels (and the region as whole) here are genuinely worth the extra distance.
🏰 Hotel Diana
Best for: architecture and culture lovers, romantic escapes, people who want the building to be part of the story
Hotel Diana is probably our favorite property on this entire list, and almost entirely because of the building — ok, and because I (Eli) spent my childhood summers on Costa Brava and absolutely love it. Designed by Antoni de Falguera i Sivilla — a collaborator of Puig Cadafalch, one of the defining figures of Catalan Modernisme — it has been receiving guests for over a century. The architectural character is the same ornate, fairy-tale quality you get from Barcelona's Modernisme landmarks, scaled down to a beachfront boutique in Tossa de Mar's old town, sitting directly on Plaza de España.
The restaurant terrace looks over the Mediterranean. The chill-out bar moves at exactly the pace the surroundings call for. Guests also have access to the rooftop pool at the adjacent Hotel Delfín. In low season, it’s really great value.
Getting there: bus or car to Tossa de Mar. The hotel is in the old town, walkable from the bus stop.
🌊 Golden Mar Menuda
Best for: couples wanting beach plus pool, a more complete resort package
More resort-oriented than the Diana, which suits a different kind of trip. Golden Mar Menuda has 55 rooms with direct access to one of the best beaches on the Costa Brava, a terrace pool with views of both the water and Tossa's castle headland, and a terrace bar that does live music some evenings. The Sacalma restaurant covers Mediterranean food on-site. Hammock areas for the point in the afternoon when everything else requires too much effort.
If you want everything in one place without needing to organize much beyond the room, this is the more self-contained option between the two.
Getting there: bus or car to Tossa de Mar. The hotel is outside the old town walls, directly on Mar Menuda beach.

🌊 FAQ: Beach hotels near Barcelona
Which beach hotel near Barcelona is best for couples?
Hotel Casa Vilella in Sitges for architecture and intimacy. Hotel Diana in Tossa de Mar for atmosphere and history. Hotel Vila Arenys on the Maresme coast if good food matters as much as the setting.
Do I need a car?
For Sitges, Vilanova, El Masnou, and Arenys de Mar: no — all are well connected by Rodalies or Renfe trains from Barcelona. For El Vendrell, Altafulla, and Sant Salvador: a short taxi from the train station is easiest, though Altafulla-Tamarit station is genuinely close to the hotels. For Tossa de Mar: technically doable by seasonal bus, but a car hire gives you significantly more flexibility along the Costa Brava.
When is the best time to book?
Late May, June, and early September are the sweet spots — warm enough to swim comfortably, noticeably quieter than peak summer. July and August are busy across the whole coast. Sitges during Pride, Bears Week, Carnival and the Film Festival books out months in advance; reserve as early as possible if visiting then.
Which hotels are best for families?
Hotel Calipolis and URH Sitges Playa in Sitges. Le Méridien Ra Beach in El Vendrell for a proper family resort experience. Altafulla Mar Hotel for a larger, pool-heavy base on the Costa Daurada. Golden Mar Menuda in Tossa de Mar also works well.
What's the most affordable option on the list?
Hotel Llar de Capitans in El Masnou and Hotel Port Sitges tend to come in at the most accessible end of the price range, especially in shoulder season.
Is it worth going as far as Tossa de Mar?
If you can spare a long weekend rather than a single night, yes. The quality of the setting and the hotels there is noticeably above what you get closer to the city. It's a different kind of trip — plan it accordingly.
