Boutique Hotels in Portugal: Our Picks from Lisbon to the Algarve
Converted palaces, clifftop quintas, and Converted palaces, clifftop quintas, and design-led stays where the building is as interesting as the destination — our region-by-region guide to the best boutique hotels in Portugal.
The view from our room at Casal Santa Virginia, near Sintra
Portugal does boutique hotels exceptionally well, and the reason is mostly architectural. There are centuries of convents, palaces, olive oil mills, quintas, and fishermen's houses to work with — buildings that already have bones and history and character built in. Personally, we prefer hotels with character to big, impersonal chains. If you’re like us, Portugal will be heaven for you! Indeed, the best boutique hotels in Portugal tend to be conversions: a former palace on a Lisbon hilltop, a 16th-century olive mill inside Évora's city walls, a clifftop estate in the Alentejo redesigned by an architect who understood and respected what was already there.
What follows is our region-by-region guide to the best boutique stays across Portugal — from the capital to the wild Atlantic coast. Where we have a full regional guide, we link to it rather than repeating ourselves. Where we don't, we go deeper.

What "boutique hotel" actually means in Portugal
Worth a brief note before the list. In Portugal, "boutique hotel" covers a broad spectrum: from internationally recognized Design Hotels properties in Lisbon to tiny owner-run alojamento local with six rooms and a view that costs a fraction of what you'd pay anywhere else. We've included both ends of the scale, because the defining quality isn't size or price — it's character.
Boutique hotels in Lisbon
Lisbon is all about ambiance and awesome views
Lisbon is one of the best cities in Europe for boutique accommodation. The hills, the old neighborhoods, the abundance of 18th and 19th-century buildings waiting to be repurposed — it produces an unusual density of interesting places to stay. If you like good views as much as we do, you’re in for a treat. Here are our picks from the capital.
Memmo Alfama — Design Hotels
Alfama, Lisbon
A converted late 19th-century building in the heart of Alfama — Lisbon's oldest neighborhood, all cobblestones, Fado music drifting from windows (or even rooster alarm clocks, as we experienced), and staircases worn smooth by centuries of use. The hotel is adults-only, designed with restraint and real taste, and has a wine bar on the first floor with views over the Tagus River. The complimentary walking tours of Alfama are the detail we like most: it tells you something about a hotel when it wants its guests to actually understand where they are.
Torel Palace Lisbon
Santos, Lisbon
Two former palaces dating from 1902 and 1904, joined and reimagined as one of the most distinctive boutique hotels in Lisbon. The hilltop position means views that reach across the city — from the terraces and the pools — in a way that most Lisbon hotels can't match. The MICHELIN-starred 2Monkeys restaurant is on-site. Thirty-three rooms and suites, all different, with a spa and a level of service that stays personal despite the ambition of the place. One of the better special-occasion stays in Portugal.
The Lumiares Hotel & Spa
Bairro Alto, Lisbon
An 18th-century former palace in Bairro Alto — the neighborhood that stays up latest and starts latest — converted into a five-star boutique hotel with a spa and rooftop views over the city. The building's bones are extraordinary: original stonework, high ceilings, the sense of a place that has been many things before it became this. Bairro Alto puts you in the middle of Lisbon's restaurant and nightlife scene, which is either exactly what you want or something to factor in before booking.

Boutique hotels in Sintra & the Atlantic coast
Casal Santa Virginia: one of our favorite boutique hotels in Portugal
Sintra's palaces get the (many) visitors, but the real boutique accommodation action is on the coastal edge — clifftop quintas in Colares, characterful guesthouses in the hills, and a handful of well-designed small hotels in the old town itself.
We've covered boutique hotels in Sintra in detail in our dedicated guide — including our personal stay at Casal Santa Virginia (a converted clifftop quinta in Colares with Atlantic views we'd go back to tomorrow), Quinta do Scoto, and Sintra Boutique Hotel in the historic centre.

Boutique hotels in Nazaré & Ericeira
Happy me in Nazaré!
Two surf towns with completely different personalities. Nazaré is where the world's biggest waves break in winter, fishermen's wives still wear seven skirts as tradition, and the sardine grills run until midnight. We absolutely fell in love with it. Ericeira is a protected World Surf Reserve — a whitewashed village perched above the Atlantic that feels like it should be more famous than it is. Both have excellent boutique options, much of it in the smaller alojamento local category that Portugal does so well.
Immerso Hotel
Ericeira
A five-star boutique hotel on the surf coast, less than an hour north of Lisbon, with a minimalist wood-and-concrete design that fits its surroundings without competing with them. The outdoor pool, spa, and restaurant all work around the same idea: everything you need, nothing you don't. The restaurant sources locally and takes it seriously. It's a Design Hotels property, which tells you something about the level of thought that went into it.
Sónia's Apart ⭐ We stayed here
Nazaré
Technically an alojamento local rather than a hotel — but this is exactly what we mean when we say boutique character doesn't require a formal hotel category. Sónia's Apart is a beautifully run apartment right on the beach in Nazaré, and Sónia is the kind of host who makes you feel like a neighbor rather than a guest. We booked it for a few nights in fall for a steal. The views are hard to beat for the price.
We've covered both towns in depth in our full accommodation guide — surf lodges, cliff-edge rooms, and the best alojamento local along this stretch of coast.

Alojamento local
In Portugal, alojamento local (AL) is the official category for small, privately run accommodation — anything from a family-run guesthouse to a holiday apartment. It's fully regulated and listed on Booking.com alongside traditional hotels. Some of our favorite Portugal stays have been alojamento local properties — like Sónia's Apart in Nazaré — and they typically offer more character, more care, and better value than chain hotels. Plus, the money stays in the local community!

🐬 Along Portugal’s coast, you’ll often see pods of dolphins surfing the waves — from the cliffs of Nazaré to the calm waters of Setúbal and the Algarve. Locals call them “the sea’s smile,” and it’s easy to see why.
If you want to stay connected to the ocean after your trip, Fahlo’s Dolphin Bracelet supports marine research and lets you follow a real dolphin’s journey in the Atlantic.

Boutique hotels in Lagos & the Algarve coast
Lagos is the Algarve town that tends to surprise people who expected just a beach resort. The old walled town is beautiful — whitewashed lanes, a proper historic centre, the kind of neighborhood where you can eat (oh, the pasteis de nata….) and drink well and walk everywhere. It also has some of the best boutique hotel accommodation in the Algarve, which makes it a natural base for the western coast.
Boutique Hotel Vivenda Miranda
Porto de Mós, Lagos
A clifftop hotel above Porto de Mós Beach, five minutes from Lagos, with a heated swimming pool hanging over the Atlantic and subtropical gardens between you and the edge. The Algarve coastline at this end is particularly dramatic — sea stacks, golden cliffs, coves that are more sheltered than further east — and Vivenda Miranda is positioned to make the most of all of it. Adults-only, spa on-site, the kind of views that make dinner feel like an event.

Penguin Trampoline tip:
Lagos is the western Algarve base we'd recommend for anyone who wants boutique character alongside beach access. It has the best walkable old town in the region, the cliffs are extraordinary, and you're well-positioned for day trips in both directions along the coast.
Boutique hotels in Faro & the eastern Algarve
You’ll find hidden beaches scattered along the entire Algarve coast
Faro is the Algarve's overlooked capital — most visitors fly in through its airport and immediately head elsewhere, which means the old town (a walled historic quarter, a marina, and the Ria Formosa lagoon on its doorstep) stays refreshingly un-touristy. It's worth a night, and it has a boutique hotel that makes the case.
Faro Boutique Hotel
Faro old town
Built from the restoration of a historic building in the centre of Faro, three minutes from the Old Town and 450 metres from the marina. The rooftop terrace looks out over the Ria Formosa — the lagoon and nature reserve that stretches along the eastern Algarve — which is a view that most hotels in the region can't offer. A good stop for anyone exploring the eastern Algarve, and a much more interesting base than the coastal resort strip (in our opinion).

Boutique hotels in the backcountry Algarve
The Algarve interior — the limestone Barrocal hinterland between the coast and the mountains — is where some of the most interesting boutique accommodation in the whole country is quietly doing its thing. Properties like Hospedaria (a 1917 building near Tavira, restored with exceptional care) and Octant Vila Monte (a farmhouse hotel in the hills above Olhão) represent a version of the Algarve that most visitors who fly in for beach access never find.
Hospedaria
Conceição de Tavira
A former post office from 1917, restored with enough care that the building itself becomes the reason to visit. Just five rooms, all of them minimalist and quietly considered — exposed concrete, antique pieces, private patios. There's a plunge pool, a bar in the old tavern, and a restaurant doing modern Portuguese cooking well. It sits in the Algarve barrocal between Tavira and the coast, which puts you close to Cacela Velha (one of the most beautiful spots in the eastern Algarve and almost nobody goes).
Octant Vila Monte
Moncarapacho, near Olhão
A farmhouse hotel in the Algarve hills above Olhão — organic gardens, two restaurants, a pool that earns its place in the landscape, and the kind of unhurried pace the interior Algarve does better than anywhere. It's a MICHELIN Guide property and recently came through a full renovation, which shows. The Ria Formosa is a short drive away and Olhão's famous market even closer. A good base if you want to explore the eastern Algarve properly rather than just the coast, and without the resort crowds.
We've covered the backcountry Algarve picks in full in our Algarve accommodation guide.

Boutique hotels in the Alentejo & Melides
Away from the crowds at Praia da Bordeira, Portugal (Costa Vicentina)
The Alentejo hides some of the best boutique hotels in Portugal — and some of the most interesting in Europe. The design tradition here leans toward a kind of refined simplicity: whitewashed walls, local stone, pools that face open landscape rather than manicured gardens. The coastal Alentejo around Melides has become a particular draw in recent years, and two properties here set a benchmark that's difficult to match anywhere in the country.
Pa.te.os
Melides
Designed by Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus, Pa.te.os is four architecturally extraordinary houses near Melides — each with its own pool, gardens, and the kind of stillness that makes you rearrange your schedule to stay longer. The design is quietly spectacular: natural materials, carefully considered proportions, and a relationship with the surrounding landscape that feels earned rather than imposed. One of the most beautifully designed places we've come across in Portugal. Ok, the price also is extraordinary, but if you can splurge, that’s the place.
Vermelho Melides — Relais & Châteaux
Melides
Christian Louboutin's hotel is not subtle, and that's entirely the point. Deep reds, handcrafted Portuguese tiles, local artisan pieces everywhere you look — Vermelho is maximalist in the most intentional way. It's a Relais & Châteaux property, so the service matches the ambition, and the food is excellent. If you're celebrating something, this is where to celebrate it.
We've covered the full Alentejo boutique hotel scene in our dedicated guide — including Évora, Comporta, Cercal, and the Costa Vicentina.

It depends on the region and what you're looking for. In Lisbon, Memmo Alfama and Torel Palace are hard to beat. In the Alentejo, Vermelho Melides and Pa.te.os are among the best boutique hotels in the country. In the Algarve, Casa Mãe in Lagos and Hospedaria near Tavira. For Sintra, Casal Santa Virginia on the clifftop at Colares. We've covered all of these in our regional guides.
What is the best boutique hotel in Lisbon, Portugal?
Memmo Alfama is our pick for the most atmospheric location — in the heart of Alfama, with Tagus views and complimentary neighborhood walking tours. Torel Palace is the choice for a special occasion: two former palaces joined on a hilltop, with a MICHELIN-starred restaurant.
Are there boutique hotels in Sintra, Portugal?
Yes — Sintra has several excellent options. Sintra Boutique Hotel is right in the historic centre. Casal Santa Virginia in Colares sits on a clifftop with Atlantic views and is one of our personal favorites in Portugal. We cover both in detail in our Sintra accommodation guide.
What are the best boutique hotels in Lagos, Portugal?
Boutique Hotel Vivenda Miranda is the pick if you want a clifftop setting above Porto de Mós Beach.
Are boutique hotels in Portugal expensive?
Not necessarily. Portugal's alojamento local category — small, owner-run guesthouses and apartments that are officially registered and listed on Booking.com — often delivers boutique-level character at very reasonable prices. Some of the most memorable stays in Portugal are small alojamento local properties rather than formal boutique hotels.
What is alojamento local in Portugal?
The official category for small, privately run accommodation in Portugal — guesthouses, holiday apartments, and rural stays registered with the government and listed on Booking.com. Many fall into what you'd call boutique territory: individually designed, owner-operated, with real character. Don't filter them out when searching.
Here’s a playlist to set the vibe for your Portuguese escape.
Portugal's boutique hotel scene is one of the best-kept secrets in European travel — partly because the country has so much historic architecture to convert, and partly because the design tradition here leans toward understatement rather than spectacle. The best stays, in our opinion, are the ones that feel personal and unique. And Portugal excels at it.
