Best Hotels with Sauna in Alta — Warm Up After Your Northern Lights Chase

Cold nights, warm saunas, and sky full of auroras

Sauna and snow rolling is our favorite activity!

Alta is the kind of Arctic destination that sneaks up on you. One minute you’re staring at a map thinking, Why go that far north?
Then you get here, step into the silence, watch a curtain of green auroras fall over the fjord, and suddenly everything makes sense.

But here’s the thing: Alta in winter is cold. Really cold.
And the magic hits even harder when you can end the night in a steamy sauna, thawing your eyelashes while the snow quietly piles up outside. If you’re brave, you can even go for a dip in the frozen water or roll in the snow. That’s our favorite thing to do, and we can’t imagine a Nordic stay without it!

So we made your life easy — here are the best hotels with sauna in Alta, all perfect bases for northern lights hunters, winter road trippers, and anyone who believes warmth is half the adventure.

Oh, and if you’re serious about aurora chasing, you’ll find everything gathered in our Northern Lights Hub.

🚐 Can I take a tour from these hotels?

The hike from Gargia Lodge to the Finnmarksvidda plateau - you can do a snowshoe tour in winter

Yes — every hotel on this list works well as a base for tours in Alta. Most northern lights, dogsledding, snowmobile, and cultural experiences include hotel pickup, especially from places in or near the center.

If you’re staying farther out — like Sorrisniva or Gargia Lodge — you may need to drive to the meeting point and book a transfer (some operators offer pickup), but the trade-off is worth it: darker skies, quiet surroundings, and much better aurora visibility.

A few tips:

Thon Hotel Alta and Canyon Hotel are the most convenient for pickup.
Altafjord Gjestegaard often works with local operators and can help you.
Sorrisniva Wilderness Lodge runs its own tours, so you can step outside and go straight into the adventure.
Gargia Lodge offers activities on-site or nearby, but a rental car gives you more freedom.

What to pack for a winter trip to Alta

Mt Haldde (October) — Started with light hiking pants, ended up adding a merino layer at the top!

Alta gets seriously cold in winter, with temperatures swinging between –25 °C and –5 °C. Staying comfortable is all about layering up:

  • merino or thermal base layers

  • a warm fleece or wool mid-layer

  • a waterproof, insulated parka

  • sturdy winter boots with good grip (think Sorel-level warmth)

  • gloves, a proper hat, and thick thermal socks

FAQ: Hotels with sauna in Alta

Do all hotels in Alta have a sauna?

No — only a handful. This guide includes the stays where a sauna is genuinely part of the experience.

Is a sauna useful during a northern lights trip?

Yes. You’ll be outside in extremely cold conditions for long periods, so a sauna helps you warm up quickly and recover.

What’s the best area to stay in Alta?

For wilderness: Sorrisniva or Gargia Lodge.
For fjord views: Altafjord Gjestegaard.
For convenience: Thon Hotel Alta or Canyon Hotel.

Do I need a rental car in Alta?

Not mandatory, but very helpful. Alta is spread out, and chasing clear skies is easier with a car.

Can I see the northern lights directly from these hotels?

Yes — especially from Sorrisniva, Gargia Lodge, and Altafjord Gjestegaard. In the center, darker areas are a short drive away.

Alta is one of those places where the Arctic still feels wild — where auroras spill across the sky, snow squeaks under your boots, and silence stretches for miles. Add a sauna to your nights here, and everything becomes richer, warmer, and a little more magical.

Wherever you stay, let the cold be part of the story — and the sauna be part of the joy.

Stay warm. Stay curious.
Never stop wa/ondering.
